Alcohol Part 3: Neuroplasticity, psychic change, placebo effect, or a spiritual malady

With the marching of time and advances in medical treatments, and advances in the understanding of how the brain functions, we get more insight perhaps into

Carl Jung's "Psychic Change",

A change that has helped and continues to help millions recover from alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling and numerous other addictions to substances and behaviours.

There has been much research done by many, but the guy that weaves the threads of understanding together best for me is Dr Gabor Mate, a NeuroScientist working out of Downtown Vancouver in Canada. His video on Brain development is jaw-dropping!

Maté is an amazing character with a truly brilliant mind. His work in neurology has enabled him, and he has enabled us , to look closely at how areas of the brain function in people with addictions.

CT-scans can show the activity in the brain that governs decision-making, and for Maté this shows that alcoholics and people with addictions have reduced Neuroplasticity surrounding their brains,

This neuroplastic membrane can be described as the "No Muscle", and its activity is greatly reduced or missing the CT-scans of addicts and alcoholics…

But here is the Miracle…

The brain can learn to regrow this neuroplastic membrane. We can learn how to rewire our brains to think, and therefore act in different ways, where previously we had little or no control.

Are 12-step programs and Therapy interventions such as SMART Recovery, ACT, CBT AND Mindfullness our opportunity to attend the...... "No Muscle Gym" ?
